TUCSON, Ariz. – Left-handed pitcher
Rae Flores tossed a masterpiece in Sunday's matinee to help lead the tenth-ranked Eagles past San Francisco State and claim the title of 2022 Desert Stinger Tournament Champions.
The Eagles improved to 12-0 overall after going a perfect 5-0 at the Desert Stinger.
This comes just one week after
the Eagles also won the Concordia Kickoff Classic as the only unbeaten squad and host school out of 21 participating teams.
Flores allowed the Gators to get only three hits in a complete-game shutout as CUI nailed down a 4-0 victory.
The CUI offense did all of its damage in the fourth inning to give Flores and the defense some breathing room.
Sydney Sprinkle started the fun with a triple for CUI's first hit of the day. Then shortstop
Rylie Rohr connected for a RBI double that plated pinch-runner
Megan Johnson.Â
Moments later, freshman catcher
Kendall Flatt helped the cause with a clutch two-run single that scored
Lauren Lopez and Rohr to make it 3-0.
Second baseman
Michalah Robison followed with a RBI double that brought
Danielle Michaels home. All three key hits that inning were pushed to left field for the Eagles after Sprinkle's leadoff triple.
It proved to be more than enough to secure the win as Flores was in a groove.
"Rae was great on the mound today," said CUI softball head coach
Crystal Rosenthal. "She had great command of all of her pitches and held a solid offense scoreless. Overall really proud of our team's start to the season. Looking forward to getting back to work to continue to improve as we move into conference."
