Eagles Look Ahead to PacWest Play

IRVINE, Calif. – The CUI baseball team fell to the Cougars of Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday night in a game that was put in an hour weather delay due to rain and lightning. After splitting their two mid-week games against CSUSM, the Eagles now look ahead to their PacWest opener in San Francisco next weekend.

CSUSM came out looking for vengeance from their 7-0 loss to CUI on Feb. 8th, scoring five runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. The Cougars would tack on two more in the second inning and one more in the top of the fifth, all on 12 singles and no extra base hits.

With one out in the top of the fifth, lightning and rain put the game on hold for an hour and ten minutes, while the players and fans were left waiting for the weather to improve. After returning from the delay, the Cougars immediately added two more runs to end the top of the fifth inning at a score of 10-0.

Contrary to the Cougar offense, the Eagle bats struggled to heat up, not recording a hit for the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Will Bonn led off the inning by reaching base on a hit by pitch. Catcher Kevin Fowler immediately followed with a single to center field, what would become the only hit of the game for the Green & Gold. Alex Moreno then walked to load the bases. Tristan Hanoian followed Moreno by reaching on a hit by pitch, scoring Bonn from third and breaking the Eagles into the run column. A botched double play then allowed two runners to score, narrowing the deficit to seven runs.

The Cougars got five back in the top of the sixth to make the score 15-3, where it would remain for the rest of the game.

After Carson Quintana retired the side in the top of the eighth inning, the game was called due to local light curfew at 9:00 PM. This is the second time the Eagles have ended a game prematurely, the first being a 4-4 tie against Regis on Feb. 5th.

CUI now turns their attention toward PacWest play, as the remainder of their opponents are members of the conference. The PacWest Opener takes place against Academy of Art in San Francisco on Saturday, Feb. 26th, with the first game of the doubleheader starting at 11:00 AM.
