LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Eagles were looking for a sweep over No. 11 UC San Diego on Saturday night after beating the Tritons in four sets earlier in February. This time, UC San Diego did not allow CUI to get comfortable in this match as they defeated the Eagles in three sets with scores 23-25, 20-25, and 20-25.
Junior
Uriel Batista led the Eagles with eight kills and two block assists and two digs. Senior
Erik Boisvert put down five kills along with other outside hitter
Jonathan Carlson tallying four on eight attempts and no errors.
Both setters shared the court with freshman
Makai Lipson dishing out 13 assists and
McLain Mott right behind with 11. Freshman
Danny Smithers was the sole libero for the match and collected four digs throughout the match.
Every Eagle player saw the court and contributed in one way or another and played in more than just one set. Middles
Gil Herold and
Max McCullough had three blocks each defensively which earning three kills combined.
Mason Mullins came into the game and added a kill and block to help the Eagles.
Seniors
Logan Glave and
Owen Chun both threw down two kills and a block to add in the match.
Keegan Carey reached with two kills and a block while playing in two of the sets.
Slater Fuhrman came into the match for two sets to go to the back line and serve the tough top spin that can be hard to return for opponents.
In the second set the Eagles came out fighting, taking an early lead over the Tritons. UCSD slowly creeped their way to the lead halfway through the set and never allowed the Green and Gold to go on a run longer than two points. The third set was no different for the Eagles as they were not be able to get momentum going with the Tritons holding them.
The Eagles look forward to start MPSF conference play on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. to start a two game stanza against UCLA in Los Angeles, Calif. The second matchup will be in the CU Arena for the first home conference game of the season on Friday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.
