IRVINE, Calif. – The CUI men's basketball team came out victorious on Thursday night after a thrilling battle against Holy Names University. Down by two points with just two seconds left on the clock in the second half, senior
Jalen Sanders hitting a game-winning three to secure the win.
"I knew when I shot it, it felt good," said Sanders. "I let it go and I was like, that's going in. I've never hit a game-winner before, so of course I waited until my last week of playing," added the senior with a smile.
In addition to Sanders' clutch basket, he also led the offense with 20 points and eight rebounds in the game. The Colorado native shot a perfect 3-for-3 beyond the arc while shooting 72 percent from the floor. Jalen's younger brother,
Kobe Sanders, also contributed 13 points and once again lead the team with four assists. Kobe leads the Green & Gold in assists on the season with 74.
Joshua Caston (12) and
Rodrick McCobb (10) both contributed double-digit performances in the win, with
Matthew Weyand and
Kayle Knuckles also knocking down threes to keep CUI in the game.
"These guys have really come together in the last two weeks and are fighting really hard for each other," said CUI head coach Ken Ammann. "It's a fun group to compete with."
CUI secured a spot in the PacWest Tournament with their
93-89 win over Holy Names last night. With Thursday's win, they are now tied with Hawaii Hilo at seventh in the PacWest standings.
Concordia concludes the regular season against Azusa Pacific (18-7) at CU Arena this Saturday, Feb. 26
th, at 7:30 PM. The team will honor their seniors in a ceremony before the game.
