Déjà Vu At Dominican as No. 3 CUI Moves to 16-0

Eagles Dominate Penguins In Friday Doubleheader

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The undefeated No. 3 Concordia University Irvine softball team extended its impressive winning streak to 16 games after posting two more road wins over the Dominican Penguins.

The Eagles (16-0, 4-0 PacWest) took the lead in the top of the first inning in both of Friday's games and never looked back.

The pitching staff attacked the strike zone efficiently and the offense backed up the defense to help CUI move to 4-0 in PacWest Conference action.

Game 1: CUI 5, Dominican 1

Rylie Rohr smacked a triple to center field to bring home Megan Massa and Sydney Sprinkle for a quick 2-0 lead out of the gate.  Massa would add a RBI double her next time up in the second inning and then scored again when Sprinkle followed with a RBI single of her own.

With CUI holding a 4-0 advantage, the two teams were pretty even the rest of the contest.  Both squads scratched together one run but that was it as the defense ruled the day from that point forward.

Rae Flores (3-0) struck out a season-high six batters in five innings and only allowed one run on a passed ball.  Relief pitcher Madison Urrutia entered in the sixth and made mincemeat of the Penguins by mowing down three via the K and not allowing any hits in two innings.

Game 2: CUI 7, Dominican 0

Cortney Koelmans (4-0) and Erika Morris were a formidable tandem together for the second straight day in the circle. In the last game of the series, Koelmans went four shutout innings and then Morris backed her up by blanking the Penguins for the last three frames.  Both right-handers notched three strikeouts apiece and together they allowed just three total hits in a dominant tag-team performance.

Meanwhile, Rylie Rohr cranked two home runs to help give CUI some space in the fifth and seventh innings.  CUI took the lead originally in the first on a RBI groundout by Lauren Lopez.  Sprinkle added a two-run double in the third to make it 3-0 before Rohr's fireworks.

Shelli Faulk also went yard for the second straight day as she gives some extra pop to an already loaded CUI lineup.

Rohr now leads CUI with five homers and has started all 16 games at shortstop.

Massa posted her fourth consecutive multi-hit game against the Penguins, who will surely not miss seeing her on Saturday. The Rodriguez High School alum has hit safely in 14 of CUI's 16 victories and had a nine-game hitting streak to open the season.

"Overall, we did a lot of good things," said CUI head coach Crystal Rosenthal.  "Anytime you can get four wins in a conference series that's awesome.  Rylie and Megan were great up to bat, and our pitching staff did a nice job keeping their offense off the scoreboard.  We have some things to work on but overall I am happy with this start for our conference season."

The Eagles now turn their attention to Academy of Art on Sunday and Monday after getting a break on Saturday during their eight-game road trip up north.
