IRVINE, Calif. - It was a happy friday for the Eagles as they opened up the 2022 season in style with wins against two tough and talented opponents.
Megan Massa provided the walk-off RBI single to nudge No. 10 Concordia University Irvine past Northwest Nazarene 2-1 in the home opener. Freshman outfielder
Kayla Simpson collected her first career hit and RBI in game two to help the Eagles make it back-to-back wins in an eventual 5-0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino.
The first full day of the 2022 Concordia Kickoff Classic featured a whopping 21 teams playing multiple games on a beautiful Thursday at the Orange County Great Park.
With hundreds of fans enjoying a loaded day of softball just 15 minutes from CUI's campus, the Eagles stepped up to the plate and collected their first two wins of the season.
Game 1: No. 10 CUI 2, Northwest Nazarene 1
Katlin Entrup pitched quality innings in relief of starter
Erika Morris and the duo held the Nighthawks to only one run and three hits over the course of the contest.
The game was tied 1-1 after Concordia's
Michalah Robison poked a RBI single down the left field line in the third. That negated an early run the Nighthawks scratched across against the Eagles.
It stayed knotted that way until the bottom of the seventh when the Eagles put another runner in scoring positiong and Massa came up clutch.
