IRVINE, Calif. - Concordia's
Joshua Caston scored 15 points and
Rodrick McCobb added a dozen in a physical contest against Fresno Pacific on Wednesday night.
The Eagles outscored FPU in the second half and proved to be stingy defending the three-point line on Wednesday, as they have all season long. CUI limited FPU to go just 1-for-13 from downtown in the first half. The Sunbirds only shot 17 percent from long range (4-for-24) overall.
Unfortunately for the Green and Gold, the Sunbirds were very efficient in the paint and in particular on many of their drives to the basket. FPU fed off of nine CUI turnovers in the first half to build a 32-15 advantage. CUI trailed by double digits early in the first half and cut the deficit in half later in the second period before running out of time.
"The confusing and frustrating part is we knew what we had to do to win this game and our players really prepared in practice at a high level," said CUI head coach
Ken Ammann. "And we were ready to go before the game as much as we have been all year."
Concordia (10-9, 7-6 PacWest) started the day tied with Fresno Pacific in the Top 5 of the league standings. The Sunbirds (14-6, 8-5) moved ahead of the Eagles after sweeping the season series.
Concordia will host their rivals from Biola this Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The women play earlier that day at 2 p.m. in CU Arena.
