Metcalfe Goes The Distance To Clinch Series

IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team wrapped up their PacWest home opener against Hawai'i Hilo on Tuesday. The Eagles clinched the series after the first game of the day 6-2 while the second game went in favor of the Vulcans 4-5 that went into extra innings. The Eagles move to 6-2 in the PacWest conference (12-9-1 overall) and are sitting tied at first place with Point Loma.
 
Game 1: CUI 6, UHH 2
 
Mason Metcalfe started on the mound for the Eagles and had an outstanding performance. The junior went the distance pitching a complete game allowing seven hits and only one earned run in nine innings. This marks his third game with no walks and moves to 3-0 on the season.  
 
The Green and Gold were first on the scoreboard with an RBI single from Hayden Winters to bring home Richard Castro who reached on a double to left field in the second.
 
The Vulcans managed to get off two runs in the fourth, but the Eagles quickly retaliated in the bottom of the inning. Castro started the momentum with being hit by a pitch and a wild pitch to move Kevin Fowler and Castro on the bases. Moreno comes up clutch with two outs and swings for a three RBI double scoring Nathan Benefieto, Fowler, and Castro. Shane Wallace smacked a two-run bomb that stretched a 6-2 lead over the Vulcans.
 
The remaining frames held out scoreless for both teams as the Eagles tried to get things going but the Vulcans pitcher only allowed two hits in the sixth.
 

Game 2: CUI 4, UHH 5
 
Jamison King and Colton Bulger pitched three innings each allowing seven hits combined. Bulger struck out four at the plate with Carpenter Pagett contributing three strikeouts. Matthew Williams came out on the mount to face one hitter in the eighth who grounded out to short stop Tristan Hanoian.
 
UHH started the second game off scoring in the beginning with two RBI hits with one being a home run. Benefeito reached on an error by the third baseman in the fourth to get things going for the Eagles. Two back-to-back hits from Dante Catalino and Moreno put a run on the board for CUI.
 
CUI took advantage in the next three innings and scored four while keeping the Vulcans silenced. Benefeito homered to right field to bring in Castro and tie with three each. Dixon earned a single to third base while stealing second to get in scoring position. Jackson Collins knocked an RBI single to right field line to bring home Dixon and take the lead over the Vulcans 4-3 in the sixth.
 
The Vulcans had three hits in row that brought an RBI single to tie the game yet again at four a-piece and kept CUI from scoring in the bottom of the seventh to go into extra innings. UHH were able to get on base with two outs and get in scoring position on second base. The Vulcans scored on an unearned run in the eighth and kept the Eagles with three outs to take the win 4-5.
 
The Eagles will be back on the field as they take on Hawaii Pacific two doubleheaders starting on Friday, Mar. 18 with new times at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. They will finish the series the following day on Saturday, Mar. 19 with slated times of 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
