Back-To-Back Blasts Lift No. 2 CUI - Twice

Undefeated Eagles Move to 30-0 to Start 2022

IRVINE, Calif. – It's rare that teams have players hit back-to-back home runs.

The No. 2 Concordia Eagles have two starters that did that twice on Friday.

Missy Nemeth and Rylie Rohr went yard in consecutive at-bats in each game against Hawai'i Hilo helping propel the undefeated Eagles to two more victories.

Concordia moved to 30-0 overall and 18-0 in PacWest Conference play, all while extending the longest winning streak to begin a season in program history.

The trio of Erika Morris, Katlin Entrup, and Cortney Koelmans limited the Vulcans to only eight total hits on the afternoon and just one run.

The Concordia pitching staff has also remarkably allowed just two total runs in its last seven games.

Game 1: CUI 2, UHH 1

Three swings in the sixth inning supplied all the scoring in a pitcher's duel that went down to the wire.

The Vulcans took the lead when Nikki Zielinski crushed a solo shot to make it 1-0.

Concordia has not trailed for many innings this entire season and the offense responded quickly.

Cleanup hitter Missy Nemeth bashed a monstrous homer to tie the game at 1-1. Then shortstop Rylie Rohr followed suit as the very next batter and mashed the go-ahead home run to put CUI in front 2-1.

Erika Morris was superb in the circle and only allowed that one home run in six innings of work. She struck out three and scattered five other hits that never led to any damage.

Katlin Entrup entered for the final frame and earned her third save of the year by helping the Eagles hang on.  She only allowed two batters to reach base via the walk before closing out the victory.

Outfielder Megan Massa contributed two hits while Lauren Lopez and freshman catcher Kendall Flatt each helped the cause with one base hit.

Game 2: CUI 4, UHH 0

Entrup was already in a groove from her appearance in the series opener and started the second game in the circle. She tossed five shutout innings before handing things off to Cortney Koelmans.

Together that duo kept the Vulcans off the scoreboard in the rematch. That's been a theme these last few weeks as the CUI pitchers have posted five shutouts against recent opponents in the month of March.

Sydney Sprinkle got the Eagles on the board in the bottom of the third when she cranked a RBI double down the left field line. That scored Lauren Lopez who had reached earlier on a base hit of her own.

But once again two swings proved to be exclamation points on a fine day on the diamond for the Green and Gold.

Nemeth sent a two-run homer over the wall in the bottom of the fifth inning to push the lead to 3-0. The very next batter was Rohr and it was déjà vu all over again. Rohr walloped a pitch she liked deep and gone to send the home dugout and crowd into a frenzy and complete the scoring.

There were some impressive plays on defense that helped CUI as the sun began to set on this doubleheader.  Kendall Flatt made a fantastic catch behind the plate on a fouled-off bunt attempt to end the top of the fifth inning. Then in the sixth, left fielder Kaia Nisby made a diving catch to rob a Vulcan of a base hit in the gap.

The Eagles host the Vulcans for another PacWest doubleheader on Saturday with game one slated to begin at 12 p.m. PT.
