IRVINE, Calif. – After coming off a sweep Friday, the Eagles were looking to continue momentum as they took on GCU Saturday. The Eagles won the first set 25-18 but lost the next three with scores 20-25, 23-25, and 21-25. CUI move to 10-10 on the season and 3-5 in MPSF conference.
Just when we thought
Owen Chun outdid himself yesterday with 24 kills, he came out Saturday with even more finishing Saturday with a whopping 28 kills. This marks the second night in a row that he broke a school record with the first one being 24 kills in three sets and now 28 kills in four sets which were previously done by alum
Raymond Barsemian. He added six digs and a crucial solo block that shut down the Lopes outside hitter.
Gil Herold was big up at the net in the middle with six kills while
Max McCullough had four kills and hit above .330. Both middles came up big defensively putting up three blocks each.
Erik Boisvert and
Jonathan Carlson both swung for five kills and had a combined of 15 digs from the back that stunned the crowd.
Kobe Kiley had career highs in a double digit game of 10 digs and seven assists.
McLain Mott dished out 27 assists and had thrown down three kills that went untouched by GCU. Freshman
Makai Lipson came into the game and had 13 assists and
Keegan Carey put down a couple kills to give the Eagles momentum on the court.
The Green and Gold came out in the first set the way they finished Friday taking a 1-0 lead over the Lopes. A few runs from GCU gave them an advantage to take the lead in the next three sets and did not allow the Eagles to get back in the game.
CUI will take on No. 7 Pepperdine in a two game series as they will be in the CU Arena on Thursday Mar. 31 at 7 p.m. and be in Malibu, Calif. on Saturday, Apr. 2 with a 6 p.m. start time.
