IRVINE, Calif. - For the second straight day, the Hawai'i Pacific Sharks hung tough with the No. 1 DII softball team in the nation and forced extra innings.
And just like the day before, the Concordia University Irvine Eagles found a way to get it done and keep their unbelievable winning streak alive.
CUI swept the doubleheader and the series with the Sharks to move to 36-0 overall and 24-0 in the PacWest. The Eagles hold a six-game lead on Azusa Pacific with only eight games remaining in conference play.
CUI was recently named the No. 1 team in the NFCA DII Coaches Poll for the first time this season and the second time in program history.
The Eagles extended the longest win streak to start a season in school history and
CUI also holds the longest current winning streak out of all college softball teams at any level. The CUI softball record for consecutive wins is 44.
Game 1: CUI 1, HPU 0
The Eagles escaped with a 1-0 victory in eight innings in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader thanks to a walk-off home run by shortstop
Rylie Rohr that was absolutely bashed over the left field wall.
Four different Eagles had launched fly balls to the outfield in the previous last four at-bats but Rohr left no doubt by sending a screamer towards the batting cages to push CUI to 35-0 on the season.
Cortney Koelmans tossed six shutout innings and only allowed one hit by the Sharks.
HPU pitcher Taylor Thompson was also tremendous for the second straight day against the Eagles and limited CUI to only two hits in 7.1 innings while striking out six.
Katlin Entrup entered in the seventh and was in the circle for the last two frames. She struck out three and allowed just one hit and earned the win to move to a team-best 14-0 on the year.
Game 2: CUI 3, HPU 1
Sydney Sprinkle opened the scoring with a RBI single in the first inning after
Megan Massa led off with a base hit. Before Sprinkle walked to the plate,
Mia Saucedo attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt but wound up beating out the play safely at first to put two on and nobody out for the Eagles starting third baseman.
After HPU tied the game in the top of the sixth, the Green and Gold responded immediately with two runs to retake the lead for good. Catcher
Shelby Pfeiler supplied a RBI single up the middle to make it 2-1 which would prove to be the difference-maker.
Two batters later,
Michalah Robison laid down a sacrifice bunt which scored pinch-runner
Megan Johnson to make it 3-1.
Rae Flores tossed a complete game and only allowed one unearned run on three hits. She struck out five and walked only one batter. Flores is now 7-0 on the season with a sterling 0.94 ERA.
Remarkably,
three other CUI pitchers actually have a lower ERA than Flores!
Koelmans (0.51 ERA), Entrup (0.70) and
Erika Morris (0.79) join Flores with a sub-1.00 ERA. CUI continues to lead all of NCAA DII with an eye-popping 0.82 ERA.
Next up for the top-ranked Eagles is a trip to Turlock, Calif. where CUI will face five opponents in the annual Tournament of Champions hosted by Stanislaus State.
