IRVINE, Calif. – The CUI baseball team concluded their non-conference series against No. 5 Point Loma on Monday, dropping both games of the doubleheader. Concordia still maintains a winning record on the season at 9-8-1 (3-1 in PacWest), while the Sea Lions improve to an impressive 17-1.
Game 1: CUI 1, PLNU 3
In the bottom of the first inning, CUI was able to push across their sole run of the day on an RBI groundout to second base by
Jackson Collins, scoring
Nathan Benefeito from third.
Starting pitcher
Matt Des Marets gave the Green & Gold a quality start on the mound, surrendering just two earned runs and four hits in 6.0 innings of work. This was Des Marets second consecutive quality start, after striking out 11 in 6.1 innings against Academy of Art on February 27
th. He now sports a 3.20 ERA with the second-most strikeouts on the team (20).
The play of the day came in the top of the fifth inning, when
Calvin Schonebaum made a leaping catch at the wall to rob a home run and keep the game within one.
Noah McBride shut the door in the final 2.2 innings, but with the bats struggling to get going against PLNU pitching, it was not enough for Concordia to make a comeback in the final innings.
Game 2: CUI 0, PLNU 4
Jorge Arellano started for the Eagles on the mound, quickly running into some trouble in the first inning. After allowing two runs to score in the first five batters,
Colton Bulger came in and escaped the jam with a first pitch fly out. Bulger would go on to throw 3.1 innings, his longest of the 2022 campaign, striking out three and allowing three hits. The junior has yet to allow a run this season in 9.0 innings.
Carpenter Pagett had a strong performance out of the pen, striking out three in 3.1 innings. The Thousand Oaks native made just one mistake in the top of the fifth inning, when PLNU's catcher connected for a home run on a full count to extend the lead to 3-0.
Catcher
Kevin Fowler led the offense, recording two of the four hits in the game for the Eagles. CUI's best scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth inning when
Michael Dixon led off with a double to right center field.
Jackson Collins followed with a walk, then
Richard Castro singled to right field to load the bases. However, Point Loma's closer would not let it get any further as he struck out the next two batters to end the inning and regain the momentum. Concordia would be retired in order in the seventh to end the game with a final score of 4-0.
The Green & Gold look to rebound next Monday, March 14
th, and Tuesday, March 15
th, in back-to-back PacWest doubleheaders against Hawaii Hilo (13-6) at Eagles Field.
