CUI Tennis Teams Pile Up The Wins; Simon Named PacWest Player of the Week

Simon Named PacWest Player of the Week After Undefeated Start

IRVINE, Calif. – On the same day the Concordia University Irvine men's tennis team secured its third straight victory, senior Jan Simon was named PacWest Conference Player of the Week.

It's Simon's first career honor and also the first time this season a CUI tennis player has won this award.

Simon went undefeated in both singles and doubles this past week in matches against Point Loma and Colorado Mesa. The senior from Germany helped CUI secure a huge 4-3 victory over the Sea Lions which could wind up to be a critical tiebreaker when the conference seeding is announced at the end of the regular season. Both Concordia and PLNU are in contention for the four playoff spots in the NCAA West Regional play-in matches.

In that victory over the Sea Lions, Simon teamed up with Younes Kodiji to win their doubles match by a count of 6-1. Simon also won in straight sets at the No. 3 singles position, beating Nabeel Khan by a score of 6-2, 6-4.

Simon moved up to No. 2 singles and again won against Colorado Mesa 6-2, 6-3. He kept his streak of sets going on Monday morning with a 6-0, 6-1 win against his opponent from Michigan Tech. The Eagles won Monday by a dominating 5-0 score.

No. 25 Concordia has now won three matches in a row to move to 4-4 overall and 3-3 against NCAA Division II opponents.

The men's tennis squad hosts Washburn on Thursday and then Biola on Friday. Both matches begin at 1 p.m. on CUI's campus.

Meanwhile, the CUI women's squad also won back-to-back matches at home. The Eagles cornered Colorado Mesa 6-1 last Friday before taking down the Huskies on Monday just like the men.

Maya Arksey at the No. 2 singles spot and Alyssa Zayat at the No. 3 singles position both won their matches in straight sets, as did Kimia Rahmani at No. 4 singles. Alicia Da Re net a win at No. 5 singles against Colorado Mesa as did Tiffany Carrillo at the No.1 singles position.

The combinations of Carrillo and Zayat at No. 1 doubles and Rahmani with Da Re at No. 2 doubles also proved to be worthwhile, as both duos emerged victorious to secure the doubles point against the Mavericks.

The women's tennis team hosts Southwest Minnesota State on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. and then Biola on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the CUI tennis courts.
