AZUSA, Calif. – The CUI baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader on Saturday against APU as they finished the series. The Eagles move to 20-20-1 overall and 14-10 in PacWest conference play.
Game 1: CUI 6, APU 9
Mason Metcalfe started on the mound and pitched for 3.2 innings giving up seven hits and eight earned runs.
Noah McBride came in and finished the game pitching 4.1 innings only allowing one hit and striking out four APU players.
Nathan Benefeito led the Eagles going 4-for-5 with one double to left center.
Michael Dixon and
Richard Castro both earned another home run following where they left off Friday at the Eagles Field.
Will Bonn and
Jackson Collins both had two hits.
Azusa Pacific was on the scoreboard first after a two run RBI in the bottom of the second. The Cougars continued to score in the next two innings taking an 8-0 over the Eagles. Dixon retaliates in the fifth and hits a solo home run to left center putting a run on the board for the Green and Gold.
Kevin Fowler doubles down the left field line to bring
Tristan Hanoian home after a walk. CUI went on a run in the eighth with Dixon hitting an RBI single followed by another Castro homer to left field moving Dixon and Fowler around the bases. The Eagles moved their deficit to just three with a score 6-9 and the Cougars held them until the end of the game.
Game 2: CUI 1, APU 8
Starting pitcher
Riley O'Sullivan pitched 2.2 innings and striking out four along the way.
Carpenter Pagett came in to relieve and had one hit with three strikeouts in 1.1 innings.
Colton Bulger finished the two innings on the bump having three hits and two strikeouts.
APU struck first again earning all their runs in the second and third inning taking an early lead. Castro moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by the catcher in the fifth inning. The Eagles tried to get things going again in the seventh with Dixon starting off with a double to center. With two outs Benefeito singled to move Dixon to third, but APU finished the series with a strike out.
CUI will be on the road as they play a non-conference game against Biola on Tuesday, Apr. 19 at 2 p.m. The Eagles will continue PacWest play in a series against Point Loma. The first doubleheader will be played in San Diego, Calif. on Thursday, Apr. 28 with slated start times of 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The Eagles will finish the last two games at the Eagles Field Friday, Apr. 29 at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. where they will honor the seniors.
