Castro Hits 11th Home Run As Eagles Battle in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The CUI baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader on Thursday to No. 3 Point Loma, falling to 21-22-1 on the season. The Eagles are now tied with Fresno Pacific for fourth in the PacWest standings with a conference record of 14-12.

Game 1: CUI 7, PLNU 11

Despite outhitting the Sea Lions, Concordia fell short in the series opener. Will Bonn, Michael Dixon, Richard Castro, Nathan Benefeito, and Jackson Collins each provided multi-hit performances, combining for 12 total hits. Bonn and Castro also drove in multiple runners, while Dixon led the team in scoring with two runs.

Matt Des Marets started on the mound for the Green & Gold. The freshman threw a scoreless two frames to start the game, but allowed PLNU to tie it up in the third on a solo home run. After CUI scored three in the top of the fourth, the Sea Lions responded with two of their own. Point Loma began to apply more pressure in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on two hits. With the loss, Des Marets falls to 2-4 on the season after allowing seven runs in 4.1 innings, while striking out two and walking four on 79 pitches.

Carpenter Pagett, Colton Bulger, and Matthew Williams closed out the rest of the game, allowing a combined three earned runs on three hit in 3.2 innings. After gaining the lead in the fifth, the Sea Lions were able to hold on and secure the 11-7 victory.

Game 2: CUI 5, PLNU 7

Riley O'Sullivan took the ball in game two, throwing 111 pitches over 7.0 innings, his first time breaking the century mark in pitch count this season. The sophomore allowed seven earned runs in the game, with the majority them coming on one swing in the second inning when Otto Kemp hit a grand slam to right field. After the grand slam, O'Sullivan threw four consecutive scoreless frames in the middle innings to keep CUI within reach. However, a run in both the seventh and eighth would allow the Sea Lions to edge out the victory.

Calvin Schonebaum and Richard Castro each went deep at the plate, while Tristan Hanoian collected a double for the Green & Gold's three extra base hits. Castro's home run was his 11th of the season, putting him tied for fifth in CUI's single season record list. He is also currently tied for fourth in the PacWest, being one of six players with double digit home runs.
