Eagles Clash With Cougars In Battle of Top Ten Teams

IRVINE, Calif. - No. 2 Concordia University Irvine and No. 8 Cal State San Marcos have proven they are among the best teams in the entire country this season.

They entered Saturday's non-conference doubleheader as the top two NCAA DII softball programs in the entire West Region and have high hopes for a deep playoff run in the coming weeks.

In their highly anticipated showdown, the Eagles outhit the Cougars 16-14 on the day, but Cal State San Marcos escaped with a pair of close victories after the final outs were recorded.

Game 1: CSUSM 5, CUI 4

Rae Flores limited the Cougars to just three hits in seven innings in the circle.  CSUSM tallied five runs but four of them were unearned.due to a couple of errors.
Flores struck out four batters and walked six to keep the game within reach. Outside of one big third inning from the Cougars, CUI shutout the visitors ove six frames.

The bats came alive for Concordia in the bottom of the seventh.  Trailing 5-0, freshman Kendall Flatt got the Eagles on the board with a RBI single to center that scored Megan Johnson.  Three batters later, Jasmine Gorman took one for the team and was hit by a pitch to force home CUI's second run.

The next batter was Sydney Sprinkle who smashed a single to left field to plate Lauren Lopez and Mia Saucedo who were already aboard.

That brought shortstop Rylie Rohr to the plate with the tying run on second base and CUI within 5-4. However, Cougars pitcher Jamie Ponce was able to wiggle out of the jam and record the third out before CUI could extend the game.

Game 2: CSUSM 4, CUI 2

Michalah Robison supplied a clutch two-run single to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.  Her base knock plated Jasmine Gorman who had singled earlier in the inning, and pinch-runner Megan Johnson who had come in to the contest for Sydney Sprinkle.

Robison and Sprinkle each led the offense with two base hits. First baseman Shelli Faulk added a single as well.

Cortney Koelmans started game two and went 6.1 innings.  She racked up eight strikeouts and only allowed two runs on six hits.

CSUSM forced extra innings by scratching together the tying run in the seventh.  After back-to-back singles to start the top of the eighth, the Cougars scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly and tacked on an insurance run that wound up completing the scoring.

The Eagles return to action up north as they head to Holy Names to play doubleheaders this Thursday and Friday. The first game each day is set to begin at 12 p.m.  and all four games will be played at Chabot College in Hayward, Calif. hosted by the Hawks.

CUI can clinch the PacWest Conference regular season title with multiple victories this week as the Eagles hold a six-game lead on second-place Azusa Pacific with eight league games remaining for both schools. CUI also already defeated APU twice so far this season.
