SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Concordia University Irvine women's soccer team topped No.6 Point Loma for the first time since the school joined the NCAA DII level. Additionally, it is the first victory in CUI women's soccer history where they bested the Sea Lions at their home field.
The Golden Eagles found a way to hold the PLNU offense at bay throughout the first half, restricting them to only four shots, with
Riley Urquiza saving the two most threatening chances.
Sophia Munoz and
Riley Walkington were the lone Golden Eagles to put pressure on the Sea Lions goalkeeper, combining for three shots.
Following the short break, the home team exploded from the first whistle of the half, taking a quick lead from a tight left-footed finish from Alison Pepper.
After ten minutes of play following the first goal, the Golden Eagles responded with a powerful header from
Brianna Guerra, leaving the Sea Lions keeper stunned.
Jadenn Carrillo earned her second assist off a corner and third total on the season with the perfectly placed cross in Guerra's path.
The Golden Eagles continued to pressure the hosts in the 78th minute, the green and gold suffered a blow after being shown a red card, putting them at a disadvantage for the remaining ten minutes.
Two minutes later,
Layla Comeaux pounced on a loose thrown-in ball, blowing by the waiting Point Loma midfielder. She was immediately taken down, but her momentum squeezed the ball towards the middle of the box where a diving
Hailey Havican collected the pass, pushing the ball from her left foot to her favored right, catching the PLNU back line off-balance and sneaking her strike into the near post.
Havican tallied the first goal of her career at CUI at an amazing time.
The visitors took a 2-1 advantage with less than ten minutes left in the game even though they were down to ten players on the field.
As the Golden Eagles sunk back to stall for the remaining time, the Sea Lions kept on the pressure with three threatening attempts fired at
Riley Urquiza. Urquiza's composure in the net helped keep all threats to a minimum, saving all final chances.
Urquiza's sixth start in net for the Golden Eagles saw her collect a season-high five saves and give her now 21 saves this season so far.
After Wednesday's strong performance, CUI improves to a 4-2-1 and stays undefeated against nationally ranked opponents after tying #10 Western Washington in late August.
