Box Score 2 LA JOLLA, Calif. - Playing for the first time as Golden Eagles, the Concordia University Irvine men's water polo team turned in a resilient effort in the pool against two vastly different opponents at the Triton Invitational.
Concordia went to double overtime against Redlands in what was a thrilling back-and-forth game between two evenly-matched teams. The game was ultimately decided in sudden death, with Redlands escaping 15-14.
Jeff Runyan scored six goals to lead the Golden Eagles on offense. This included a pair of goals in both the second period as well as the second overtime period. His last two scores came less than 60 seconds apart to help extend the game.
Newcomer
Leo Erickson net his first career goal in the second period to give CUI a 4-3 lead. He later tallied his second goal as a Golden Eagle to push his squad ahead 11-9 midway through the fourth period.
The game was so close for the entirety of the game that Erickson's second goal marked the only time either team led by more than one goal in regulation.
Callin Chimilar and
Jacob Stuart joined Erickson with scoring two goals apiece.Â
Andrew Dimino and
Austin Wade each found the back of the net as well to help the cause. Dimino scored in the fourth period at a crucial time and Stuart came up clutch with an overtime score.
The Golden Eagles also faced No. 2 USC earlier on Saturday morning. The Trojans looked the part as they were NCAA national runner-ups a year ago and were able to earn the victory by notching 24 goals.
CUI will now play two more times on Sunday. This includes a matinee at 12 p.m. against Whittier before closing out the tournament at 5:15 p.m. against Westcliff.
All games are being hosted by UC San Diego. Unfortunately, this weekend's tournament does not include a video live stream or live stats via the FOSH.
