The Green and Gold traveled to Dominican University Saturday afternoon where they fell to the Penguins 73-67. This game was back and forth throughout but at the end Dominican pulled away.
Sophomore guard
Kobe Sanders led the Golden Eagles in scoring dropping 14 points while going a perfect 4 for 4 from the charity stripe. Fellow sophomore
Freddie Dybala was right behind Sanders in scoring, posting 11 points while shooting 50% from behind the arc.
CUI did a great job of slicing through the Penguins defense and forcing them to foul. Once at the free throw line, the Golden Eagles made sure to cash in on those free buckets as they went a strong 87% from the line.
After seeing a season-high in minutes the previous game, redshirt junior
Jonah Tolmaire dished out a season-high in assists (4). Fellow junior
Alpha Okoli hit the boards hard for CUI, and that resulted in him grabbing a season-high in rebounds (8).
"Dominican is a good team and they made a lot of tough shots," said CUI head coach
Ken Ammann. "I felt we had one of our best first halves on defense and we were still down five. Our bench was sensational," added Ammann.Â
Jonah Tolmaire,
Jackson Tucker and
Connor Gleason gave it all they had and gave us a huge lift in both halves. Also both halves when they went in, the momentum was really against us and they still got it done.
Alpha Okoli ,
Kobe Sanders and
Freddie Dybala also played a huge part getting us back from down 15 to a play away from getting the win. Really proud of those guys effort."
The Golden Eagles now have 11 days off to get healthy before they host Chaminade Feb. 1 at 7: 30 p.m.
