IRVINE, Calif. - Saturday afternoon, the Golden Eagles were ready to play some soccer and celebrate the seniors on Senior Day! The visiting team attending the contest was the Fresno Pacific University Sunbirds.
Riding that wave of success on both sides of the field from the last game, the Golden Eagles did not disappoint..
In the 39th minute of the game, Golden Eagles could draw a handball from the Sunbirds leading to a PK by
Tyler Oakson. Blasting that PK out of the goalkeeper's reach, Oakson broke the ice making it 1-0.
The pressure was on for the Sunbirds defense. The Golden Eagles offense drew a foul within the penalty box resulting in another PK!
Anthony Morales this time lined up for the kick, took a deep breath, shot, and scored the second goal of the game for the Golden Eagles making it 2-0 in the 44th minute. With a bit of defensive miscommunication, the Sunbirds did answer back making it 2-1 going into the half.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles offense wasted no time using a free kick from
Sergio Gutierrez to connect with
Alfonso Montano for a beautiful goal over the goalie just 43 seconds into the half making it 3-1.
Staying poised in a physical game and using physical play to the Golden Eagles advantage seemed to be a great game plan. Not even five minutes later,
Sergio Gutierrez and
Alfonso Montano had great field awareness to find a slashing
Kevin Sanchez who found the back of the net in the 50th minute of the game making it 4-1.
The Sunbirds had no answer for the high-octane offense from the Golden Eagles but needed to score quickly. A foul was drawn inside the Golden Eagles box rewarding the Sunbirds with a PK leading to a score making it 4-2 in the 52nd minute.
To cap off an already spectacular night of goal-scoring,
Anthony Morales threaded the needle to
Leo Sanchez in the 75th minute making the final score of the game 5-2. The Golden Eagles boasted a season-high five goals in a match, five different players scored, and they won on senior day.
