CLAREMONT, Calif. - Heading down to Claremont, the Concordia University Irvine men's water polo team faced Pomona-Pitzer for a single match on Saturday, Oct. 21. The Golden Eagles beat the Sagehens earlier in the season at the Redland Tournament, with CUI 13 - Pomona 12. This weekend's match was just as close.
Even though Pomona won the sprint, Harry Bentham scored the first goal of the game. Pomona had a few well-placed goals on powerplays, but with an assist from Bentham, Carlos Olat tied it back up for the Golden Eagles. Jacob Stuart had two back to back goals, one on a penalty and another made on even strength. It didn't take long before Leo Erickson popped in a goal for CUI making it 7-6 in the second period. Pomona Pitzer didn't back down from the fight and matched shot for shot with the Golden Eagles. With fuel still in the tank, Stuart snuck in a few more goals and Stan De Mey closed out the game with the last CUI goal. Despite a close game, the Sagehens pushed ahead in the last period.
The main offensive leader for Concordia was team captain Jacob Stuart who added a career-high five goals to the board. In fact, Stuart successfully made-up half of Concordia's points against the Sagehens and nearly has a hundred goals under his belt. Defensively, Tanner Powell made his presence known with ten momentum-shifting saves in the cage as well as three steals.
The Green and the Gold finished the match with 10 goals and a team shot percentage of .476.
Pomona Pitzer won the game with a final score of 11-10.
The next game for Concordia men's water polo is Thursday, Oct. 26 against UC Merced and Fresno Pacific on Friday, Oct. 27. The action starts at 4:30 p.m!
