IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's soccer team extended its winning streak to nine games with a 1-0 home victory over the pesky Dominican Penguins on Monday afternoon.
The ninth straight clean sheet for No. 12 Concordia ties the program record for most shutouts in a season, which was set last year by many players on this exact squad.
CUI has not lost a match during this impressive tear - or even conceded a single goal - since a 1-0 loss in the season opener against Cal State LA.
This is also the longest unbeaten streak for the CUI women since the 2017 squad rattled off a 14-game unbeaten streak (eight wins and four draws) in the team's first year at the NCAA DII level. The school record for longest unbeaten streak in women's soccer is 21 consecutive matches when the 2013 team went 18-0-3 in its first 21 games.
The Golden Eagles net the difference-maker in this one when
Val Cortez scored off a rebound midway through the first half.
Olivia Ocampo bounced a shot off Dominican's goalkeeper and it ricocheted right to the foot of Cortez who placed it across the line before the keeper could regroup.
Credited with the assist, Ocampo upped her total to a team-best nine points this season. Cortez now has three goals through her first 10 outings with the Green and Gold.
Riley Walkington and freshman
Antonella Russo lead CUI with four goals and also have nine points on the year.
Dominican threatened a handful of times in the second half, but CUI was able to ebb the tide and avoid giving up the equalizer.
CUI outshot Dominican 15-3 and collected nine corner kicks.
CUI is also just one victory away from tying the longest winning streak in program history. The women's soccer squad won 10 straight matches over the course of the 2001 and 2002 seasons. This current squad of Golden Eagles has already tied the 2013 team with nine straight victories in a single season.
CUI will visit Azusa Pacific next Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. as conference play continues in the PacWest.
It may be hard to believe but Senior Night is also just around the corner. Concordia hosts Fresno Pacific next Saturday, Oct. 21 for a doubleheader with the men playing first at 3:30 p.m. followed by the women at 6:30 p.m.
