IRVINE, Calif. - Taking a quick trip down the road, the Concordia University Irvine men's water polo team headed to UC Irvine to face the No. 6 Anteaters. It was senior day for the Anteaters and Concordia dove headfirst into an emotionally driven game. This week will conclude regular season play for the Golden Eagles. The WWPA Championship is fast approaching and CUI has a chance to take on great competition for the title.
At the start of the game, the Anteaters overwhelmed the Golden Eagles and scored six goals in the first period. Concordia sent a fair share of shots towards the UCI net, but none of them hit home. Overall, CUI out shot UC Irvine thirty-three to twenty-two. Not giving up hope, Harry Bentham stepped forward in the second period and added a Concordia goal to the board.
Dawson Brummett made his presence known after winning back-to-back sprints for Concordia.
In the third period, Stan De Mey sent a well-placed assist in Bentham's direction, who officially scored the second Concordia goal, on a power-play. The Green and the Gold took the opportunity and scored two goals in the fourth period.
Leo Erickson scored the third goal with an assist from Sam Diamond. On a power-play, Jacob Stuart followed soon after with a clean shot to the net thanks to an assist from Jace Peterson.
With only seven seconds left on the clock, Sam Diamond shot and made the fifth CUI goal with help from Erickson, making the final score CUI 5, UCI 16.
Wrapping up regular season play, the Concordia men's water polo team plays in the WWPA Championship on Friday, Nov. 17 in Illinois. The Golden Eagles first opponent will be Gannon at 9 am and soon after, semi-finals against Salem on Saturday morning.
