HONOLULU, Hawai'i – A season-high in runs and a season-low in hits allowed made for a fantastic Tuesday on the diamond for No. 17 Concordia University Irvine against Chaminade.
Katlin Entrup and
Madison Urrutia combined to throw a no-hitter in the first game of the series. Entrup allowed only one base-runner through four innings and improved to 7-1.
Madison Urrutia worked her way through a scoreless fifth inning to preserve the shutout and no-hitter.
The Golden Eagles racked up an astounding 19 hits and 23 runs in that first victory – which was just five runs off the program record of 28 set back in 1985.
They kept the momentum going in the second contest as well to propel themselves to a 6-0 record in conference play on this Hawaii road trip.
Game 1: CUI 23, CUH 0
Jocelyn Pino supplied four hits - including a grand slam – and Concordia batted around three times in five innings in the series opener.
Four crooked numbers in five innings began with a five-run second frame.
Missy Nemeth had the big hit with a two-run single after patience paid off and Chaminade walked in multiple runs.
Kaia Nisby finished with three hits and singled in a run in the third to make it 8-0.
It was a hit parade as 13 different Golden Eagles provided at least one base hit – including freshman
Alina Giles and pitcher
Cortney Koelmans.
Taylor Urrutia also collected her first career hit.
Game 2: CUI 4, CUH 0
Sydney Sprinkle launched a RBI triple and a solo homer to pace the offense in the rematch. She knocked home Massa in the first inning after Massa led off the game with a single through the right side. Sprinkle then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 right out the gate.
Sprinkle and
Missy Nemeth went back-to-back with solo homers in the top of the sixth. That rounded out the scoring as pitcher
Daniela Alvarez was dominant in the circle just like her teammates were earlier in the day. Alvarez allowed only one double and tossed a complete game shutout to deliver CUI its sixth shutout during this eight-game winning streak.
CUI and Chaminade will play twice more on Wednesday at Sand Island Park. That doubleheader is slated to begin at 2 p.m. PT (12 p.m. local Hawaiian Time).
