Triumphant First Day Of CUI Kickoff Classic

No. 19 Golden Eagles Get Strong Pitching Performances Against WWU & CSUSB

IRVINE, Calif. – Dani Cole smacked a walk-off single against Western Washington and the Concordia pitching staff combined for two shutout victories on the first day of the 2023 Concordia Kickoff Classic.

Hosting the 20-team tournament for the third time in school history, Concordia showed why it was picked No. 19 to start the season in the NFCA DII national rankings.

The Golden Eagles improved to 3-0 overall after topping the Vikings and Yotes.

The offense was led by newcomer Mary Baccay who collected four hits including a triple.

The game of the day was a ten-inning affair between the Golden Eagles and Vikings inside the beautiful stadium at Orange County Great Park.  Daniela Alvarez and Callie Nunes combined for eight shutout innings in the circle while Western Washington's Mareena Ramirez kept CUI off balance. 

Along with Katlin Entrup, Alvaraz and Nunes did not surrender a single base on balls.

The Vikings threatened throughout the game but were unable to plate a run.  Baccay finished with two hits.
 
CUI 2, Cal State San Bernardino 0

Baccay showed some power in the batter's box and had a triple to boost the offense with a triple. Sydney Sprinkle supplied a RBI double in the fourth to put CUI in front. Rae Flores got the starting nod and pitched fantastic with five shutout innings in the cirlce while Katlin Entrup finished the game for her first save of the year.

Entrup is now 2-0 with a save after CUI's first three victories.

The Golden Eagles play two more times on Saturday starting with Colorado Mesa back at Great Park as the tournament continues off-campus!

Admission is Free for all Concordia students with school ID.
