IRVINE, Calif. - Concordia and Northwest Nazarene each picked up a victory Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader but the two games were very different in style.
The opener was a pitching duel between two of the best pitchers in the west region and went to extras. Jocely Pino ultimately provided the clutch hit that was needed to help CUI escape with an exciting victory. The nightcap went differently for the Golden Eagles as the Nighthawks lived up to their last name and responded with an improved effort.
Game 1: CUI 2, NNU 1 (9 innings)
PacWest Pitcher of the Week
Katlin Entrup fired up the Golden Eagles by pitching nine impressive innings and only allowing one run. She struck out eight and did not walk a batter while limiting the Nighthawks to only four hits.
Megan Massa supplied two hits and scored the first run of the game when
Sydney Sprinkle smacked a RBI single in the bottom of the first.
The two teams traded scoreless innings for the next two hours with the exception of one lone run crossing for NNU in the top of the fourth.
That set the stage for Pino's heroics in the bottom of the ninth. Here base hit scored
Mia Saucedo from third base and sent the home dugout into a frenzy
Game 2: NNU 8, CUI 1
The rematch was a totally different story as the Golden Eagles scratched together only one run on four hits offensively.
Conversely, Sidney Booth and Maia McNicoll each hit a home run as part of a four-run first inning. McNicoll actually finished with two homers on the night to help NNU salvage a split.
The Golden Eagles return to action Saturday, Feb. 11 when they host Colorado Christian at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. for their next non-conference doubleheader. NNU and Colorado Christian will play twice against each other on Concordia's campus on Thursday, Feb. 9 starting at 1 p.m. if fans want to stop by the new refurbished stadium to check out some free softball.
