CUI Tennis Ties School Record With Nine Wins; PacWest Honors Carrillo

Carrillo Tabbed As PacWest Player of the Week

IRVINE, Calif. – Number nine, number nine, number nine.

No we're not talking about the Beatles and John Lennon from nearly 50 years ago but in this case, the repetition of the Concordia University Irvine women's tennis team and it's program-best nine-game winning streak.

It's happened three times and this year's squad made history by putting together a March to remember.  CUI improved to 11-1 overall after their latest victory which means they tied the 2009 and 2010 women's tennis teams with nine-game winning streaks.

This year's CUI women's tennis team isn't exactly avant-garde in their approach or style of play. They are just good – and they are consistent with their preparation and their execution.

Then again, when a sports team gets rolling like this, it really is a work of art to see how it unfolds.

CUI notably collects that important doubles point routinely and enters the singles section with a 1-0 lead.

That happened against Cal State Los Angeles again on Tuesday as CUI used that springboard to build momentum and cruise to a 6-1 victory in the battle of Golden Eagles.

Tiffany Carrillo was named PacWest Player of the Week after going undefeated the previous week in all her appearances. After Tuesday's performance, she improved to 8-2 at the No. 3 singles spot.  She and teammate Jessica Bear have also gone 8-2 together in doubles this season. Just like the team as a whole, that pair has not lost since facing Azusa Pacific back on March 2.

Ironically, the next challenge is a rematch with APU on Thursday, March 30 in Azusa.  A victory for the Golden Eagles would break the school record if they can push their incredible run to a 10-game winning streak.

First Batch of PacWest Tennis Rankings Announced

Both the CUI women's and men's tennis teams also earned more good news this week when the first PacWest regional rankings were announced on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles are slotted at the No. 3 spot for both the men and women – which is important because the top four teams get a first round bye on the women's side.

The top eight men's teams make the tournament while the top 12 out of 15 PacWest schools make the cut in the women's bracket.

The APU women are at No. 2 in this current ranking, while the APU men are No. 4 right behind CUI.  The men's squad also visits Azusa this Friday.
