Green And Goals: CUI Secures Third Conference Win

IRVINE, Calif.- The Concordia University Irvine women's water polo team played in a GCC matchup against CBU Wednesday and came out with a close win 11-9. In this program's history, this win over Cal Baptist is the third; the first was in 2013. It was also CUI's third conference victory in GCC play, making it the team's most conference victories in a season during the NCAA DII era.

Tamsyn Evezard started the game strong for CUI with her first goal in the first minute of the goal. The second goal came from Madison Ravelo who was 7 meters out from the goal and had a straight line shot to the upper right corner. Nicole Tormey was credited the assist on that goal.

In the beginning of the second set, the third goal came from Andie Perreira who was in set fighting off defense when Allie Gaetano made a pass to Perreira who landed it into the net. The game is tied 4-4 once Ravelo scores from a perfect full court pass from Tatiana Cava. Ravelo finds the net again just one minute later on a powerplay. Evezard ends the quarter with a buzzer beater straight shot assisted by Tormey. The Golden Eagles are ahead at that point making it 6-5 going into the second half.

Ravelo starts off the third quarter with her fourth goal of the day. Forty seconds later, the Evezard & Tormey dynamic duo strike again adding another tally to the score sheet. The last goal of the third quarter was one to note. Whitney Lee passes it in to set to Kim Reidel who makes an amazing backhand shot into the goal.

The fourth and last quarter starts with the second dynamic duo goal from Ravelo assisted by Cava. At the end of the fourth quarter there is a 5 meter penalty shot that Ravelo put away nicely. Ravelo had six goals on the day, Evezard had three and a steal, Reidel and Perreira had one. Tormey had three assists and two steals and Cava had two assists, two steals, and 11saves. Gaetano and Lee had one assist. Both teams brought the heat today but the Green and Gold secured the Gold.

"Any Conference win is a big win for us. Getting wins against division one schools makes them even better," said CUI head coach Casey Greenawalt. "We have been training hard and getting after it, we are still beat up and continue to push through together. I am very proud that we continue to train and compete at a high level and even more excited about the next month we have together."

"Our conference is very competitive and has four teams ranked in the top 15," explained Greenawalt. "I knew this coming in as the new head coach and as a team we have committed to training and competing at a level that gives us a chance in every game. We are excited about the journey we are on."

Keep up the great work team!
