KANEOHE, HI. - On Sunday afternoon, the CUI softball team closed out their road-trip with a doubleheader against Hawai'i Pacific. Having won nine of their last ten games, the Golden Eagles looked to finish off the week strong.
In the opening game, the Sharks would get on the board first in the bottom of the second off an RBI double. The lead would be short lived as later in the fourth inning, Sydney Sprinkle would launch a two-run shot over the left field fence to put the Golden Eagles up in front.
Concordia's lineup would keep their foot on the gas in the next frame as they dropped 6 runs on the Sharks. Missy Nemeth, Jocelyn Pino, Sprinkle, and Shelby Pfeiler put on a hitting clinic driving in five runners. Then Megan Massa, coming into the game leading the Golden Eagles in On Base Percentage (OBP), would get a walk with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 7 runs.
The Sharks were not able to respond to CUI's outburst and the Golden Eagles would pick up their 20th win of the season with the 8-1 victory. Concordia's bullpen was excellent with Rae Flores earning her fourth win of the season and Cortney Koelmans pitching three shutout innings.
The second game of the day saw the Sharks once again be the first team to get a run across the plate. In the bottom of the first, Hawai'i Pacific was able to capitalize off a wild pitch to go up 1-0.
Hawai'i Pacific would get their lead some insurance later in the fourth with an RBI single in the fourth as the Golden Eagles struggled to generate a response. HPU's Taylor Thompson would take a no-hitter into the seventh but Sprinkle would single up the middle to keep the game alive. Mia Saucedo would also get on base with a hit down the left field line but the Sharks would be able to close out the game before any damage was done.
With the loss the Golden Eagles end their trip in Hawai'i 10-2 and look forward to a 6 game homestand back in Irvine
CUI will be back in action on Friday at 3PM for a double header at Holy Names.
