The Green and Gold came up just short on a miraculous comeback Tuesday night against Azusa Pacific in a non-conference matchup. Graduate student
Nick Hansen got the scoring started early when he ripped a single to right field in the bottom of the first scoring freshman
Jordan Bolden.
After the first inning it was all APU through seven innings as they would go on to take a 10-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman
Landry Spitler singled to left field to get the first run across in the bottom of the seventh, that wasn't the last. The Cougars pitching staff got the case of the walks, and walked four straight batters with the bases loaded allowing the Golden Eagles to cut the deficit to 10-6. Still in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore
Connor Laeng doubled to left center scoring fellow sophomore
Troy May. After batting around the order, CUI only trailed 10-8 going into the eighth inning.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, senior leader
Calvin Schonebaum launched a homerun over the fence cutting the Cougars lead to 10-9. Then fellow senior
Chris Butterfield scored on a wild pitch to even the score at 10.
From being down 10-1 in the bottom of the seventh to tying it all up in the bottom of the eighth inning says a lot about the heart of this CUI team.
The Golden Eagles will host Biola this Friday for a double-header starting at 2 p.m.
