No. 14 CUI Slides Past Penguins On Senior Day

PacWest Champs Honor Seven Seniors & Sweep Dominican

IRVINE, Calif. – One day after clinching the PacWest regular season crown, the Concordia Golden Eagles celebrated Senior Day with an equally impressive doubleheader sweep of Dominican.

After honoring the seven seniors on the squad, No. 14 CUI muted the attack of the visiting Penguins and improved to 41-9 on the season with a 26-4 record in league play.  This is the fifth time already in Concordia's short NCAA DII era that the softball program has won at least 40 games.

On Monday, Concordia secured its fourth consecutive league title over the past four full seasons as well as the top seed in the upcoming PacWest Conference Tournament.  That four-team tourney will be hosted by Biola in La Mirada the first week in May.

Game 1: CUI 3, Dominican 1

The lefty Rae Flores was superb in the circle and in rhythm with her catcher and fellow senior Dani Cole.  Flores only allowed four hits and one run to touch the plate in six innings on the field.  She struck out a season-high six batters.

PacWest Player of the Year and senior Megan Massa contributed two hits and scored a run to tie the game 1-1 in the third.  Sydney Sprinkle sent her home with a base hit to left field.

Pinch-runner Jasmine Gorman also scored with Rylie Rohr on a two-run single by Michaela Robison in the sixth.

Katlin Entrup entered in a tough spot in the top of the seventh with Concordia clinging to its lead while Dominican started to put a rally together.  After walking the first batter she faced to load the bases with Penguins, Entrup struck out three consecutive batters to shut the door and deliver the victory.

Game 2: CUI 2, Dominican 0

Shortstop Rylie Rohr smashed her league-leading 13th home run in the fourth. The ball landed in a familiar area over the trees behind the left field fence.  Missy Nemeth added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to double the advantage.

Starting pitcher Cortney Koelmans tossed over a 100 pitches and was locked in against the Penguins. She tied her career-high with eight strikeouts over six scoreless innings of work.  It was the first time this season she has punched out that many batters in a game after doing so twice last spring.

Then Daniela Alvarez was called upon to seal the deal and she delivered.  Alvarez earned her fifth save of the season and CUI completed the four-game sweep by only allowing one run in 48 hours against the Penguins.

On deck for Concordia is the regular season finale next Saturday, April 29 in Azusa.  The Golden Eagles will play twice against the Cougars before learning who they will face in the following week's PacWest Conference Tournament.
