CUI Close Out Season In MPSF Championship Quarterfinals

STANFORD, Calif. – The CUI men's volleyball team went to Stanford to play in the MPSF Championship and was seeded No. 7. The Golden Eagles took on No. 2 BYU who came out fighting but the Cougars won in four sets with scores 20-25, 25-23, 25-18, and 25-15.

Senior Uriel Batista led the Golden Eagles with 10 kills and had five digs. Freshman Gage Doble was right behind with nine kills and posted a career-high of nine digs. Johnny Anselmo was solid up at the net as he had eight kills and hit an impressive .400.

Middles gave it all at the net as Gil Herold had seven kills and Cole Vigo added four with reaching a hitting percentage of .462 and higher. Defensively Herold had one of the two solo blocks and Vigo had five block assists throughout the match.

Both setters came into the game where Nathan Biteau dished out 26 assists while Makai Lipson added nine. The All-Freshman libero Jacob Reilly scooped up six digs from the back.

The Green and Gold came out strong in the first set taking an early lead and running with it. The Cougars hits were unmatched as Doble and Reilly were in the back making their digs looks easy. The second set was a battle as the teams toggled between the scores and keeping it close but BYU came out with the win by just two points.

CUI finished their 2023 season going 8-19 and 2-10 in MPSF play. The Golden Eagles have many accolades including beating three different ranked teams along with their first ever program win over Pepperdine.
