CUI Tennis Teams To Face APU In NCAA DII Regional

Concordia Squads Make Tennis Regional For Second Time in Three Years

IRVINE, Calif. - For the second time in three seasons, both Concordia University Irvine tennis teams have qualified for the NCAA DII West Regional Tournament.

The Golden Eagles will travel to Azusa Pacific to play the Cougars in both the men's and women's regional brackets.

Both sets of Golden Eagles placed fourth at the recent PacWest Conference Tournament after winning their quarterfinal matches and losing in the semifinals and third place games. Under head coach Jonathan Sanchez, the two tennis teams exceeded expectations as the women and men are both nationally-ranked in the Top 50 the past two weeks and outperformed their preseason rankings.  The CUI men were picked to finish fifth while the women were projected to finish seventh in the PacWest Preseason Coaches polls.

The CUI men split their previous two matches with APU.  Each school won once by a 5-2 margin.  The regional match will take place Saturday, April 29 at 2:30 p.m. PT on the same day that both the Concordia track and field teams and softball squad are also competing in Azusa.

The CUI women earned the No. 3 seed and will get a fourth opportunity to try and upend the Cougars. Their match will be held Tuesday, May 2 at 2:30 p.m. PT in Azusa.

The CUI women have won 16 games this season which is the most in the NCAA DII era and the most for the program since 2010.  The Concordia women also tied the program record earlier this spring with a nine-game winning streak which hadn't happened in nearly 13 seasons.

Unfortunately, the APU women have been a thorn in Concordia's side this spring.  Three of the four losses for the Golden Eagles have come against APU, including the most recent meeting in the PacWest semifinals.
