Golden Eagles Celebrate Senior Day

O’Sullivan Ends the Season with a Complete Game

Saturday afternoon concluded the 2023 season for CUI baseball, and it was also the end for 14 remarkable seniors. Before the double-header on Saturday, CUI honored their 14 seniors.

CUI 6, FPU 11

The first game of the double-header was a classic thriller. The offense was led by one of the graduating seniors, Nathan Benefeito who collected three hits. Junior Michael Dixon drove in three runs, and fellow junior Jake Schulz drove in two runs when he clobbered a homerun down the left-field line.

Graduating senior Mason Metcalfe got the nod for the Golden Eagles and went two innings while collecting a strikeout. This was a bullpen game for CUI, and they got solid innings from their graduating seniors.

Isaac Campbell came in after Metcalfe and retired the side in the third inning. Fellow seniors Jorge Arellano and Jake McBride each pitched a solid inning without giving up a run. Carson Quintana, another one of those seniors pitched himself out of a jam in the sixth and was greeted by his teammates as he walked off the mound.

CUI 12, FPU 1

In their last game of the 2023 season, the Golden Eagles put up a dominant performance from the first pitch to the last. Standout pitcher Riley O'Sullivan toed the rubber for the Green and Gold and pitched a complete game with six strikeouts while only giving up one run.

The offense got started early when senior Calvin Schonebaum homered in the bottom of the first scoring two runs. That was his last bat of his career, as coach Turgeon subbed him out to a round of an applause from the crowd.

Schonebaum started it off for the seniors in the lineup, and they continued to hit. Hayden Winters, Derek Delgado, Nathan Benefeito, and Chris Butterfield all collected hits in the game and each got subbed out to a round of applause from the crowd.
