IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine baseball team started a four game stanza against Azusa Pacific Friday who remains one of the top teams in the PacWest conference. The Golden Eagles split on the day against the Cougars going 1-1.
Nathan Benefeito put up two homers today and has tied his career best in a season from the last two seasons and is looking to go beyond. "Bene is one of those guys you can really trust. He makes small adjustments during the week to try to help to be successful in the weekend and it showed today for sure," said head coach Joe Turgeon.
CUI 3, APU 2
Freshman
Josh Pugh started on the mound for the Golden Eagles and pitched seven innings only allowing one hit and one run followed up with five strikeouts. Pugh had a no-hitter going through five innings until APU broke it up with a clean double to left center in the sixth.
"Steady. Just every day. He has had a little tough luck this year on some innings and some innings we haven't put up a lot of runs for him. [Pugh] is doing great and a great guy to start the series," adds Turgeon on Pugh.
Jorge Arellano and
Jake McBride came into the game where McBride earned his second save of the season.
Nathan Benefeito put up three on the scoreboard hitting a home run to right center and bringing home
Jordan Bolden and
Owen Gott. The Cougars made things interesting earning two hits and two runs in the top of the eighth to bring the score within one.
APU 4, CUI 2
APU was first on the board with an RBI single to right center in the top of the second to start off the second game of the day. The Cougars continued their momentum in the third with a two-run homer that was hit to right center which gave them a 3-0 lead over the Golden Eagles.
Benefeito answered back in the bottom of the fifth with his second home run of the day to right center to bring the score within one. APU scored one run in the seventh and shut out CUI in the seventh to finish by a close 2-4.
Brett Finnel started on the bump and went six innings striking out five and allowing three runs. Arellano came into this game as well along with
Dawson Radik who pitched one inning and either did not allow a hit from the Cougars.
The Golden Eagles move to 14-14 (9-8 PacWest) and will finish the conference series against APU on Saturday Apr. 8 with another doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
