Golden Eagles Use Mulligan On First Day of Super Regional

CUI Gets Chance to Bounce Back Friday in Best-of-Three Series At Home

IRVINE, Calif. – Over the course of the past four months, the Concordia University Irvine softball team racked up an eye-popping 25 shutout victories.

Behind a pitching staff that led all of NCAA DII with a team ERA under 1.00, the Golden Eagles used those arms to form an identity and baffle the majority of the teams they faced.

Unfortunately in the first game of their best-of-three series with Cal State San Marcos, the Golden Eagles opened the NCAA DII Super Regional on the wrong end of a shutout.

The Cougars put together a really balanced game and took the opener of the series 9-0.  Pitchers Jayline Sloss and Savannah Coyle combined to allow only seven CUI base runners on Thursday afternoon.

The middle infielders for CUI combined for three hits.  Second baseman Mary Baccay had two singles and Rylie Rohr provided the first base knock of the day in the second inning.

The Golden Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cougars turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat.

Concordia was unable to string together another rally this time and will look to bounce back on Friday.

It actually was not a great day for the majority of the top-seeded teams throughout the country in this tournament. The No. 1 seeds all made it to the NCAA DII Super Regional, but those eight favorites combined to go 2-6 on Thursday in game one of their respective best-of-three series.  The only winning top seeds were UT Tyler and North Georgia.

First pitch for game two of this Super Regional will be at 12 p.m. on Friday.  CSUSM will be the designated home team and the Golden Eagles will be in the visiting dugout.  If Concordia wins game two, a coin flip will determine the designated home team for the deciding game three which is slated to start at approximately 2:30 p.m.
