AZUSA, Calif. – For the second time in three years, the Concordia University Irvine women's tennis team advanced to the NCAA DII West Regional along with the men's squad.
It's been a historic season for the Golden Eagles as they tied the program record with a nine-game winning streak earlier this spring and also locked down the most wins (16) in one season since 2010.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end at some point and Concordia's kryptonite appeared to be the Azusa Pacific Cougars.
Matched up with APU for a fourth time this season in the regional, Concordia could not crack the code as their conference rival won the doubles point and put the pressure on early. APU clinched with three wins in singles play before CUI could secure a couple points to extend the contest.
Concordia's
Tiffany Carrillo and
Alicia Da Re were leading their respective matches at No. 3 and No. 6 singles but those pairings went unfinished. Da Re won the first set 6-1 and was starting her third while Carrillo won her first set 6-4 and was within striking distance in the second.
The Golden Eagles complete their impressive season 16-5 overall and finished fourth at the PacWest Conference Tournament.
CUI notably went 16-1 this year against schools not named Azusa Pacific.
