IRVINE, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball team finished off their Golden Eagle Invitational with two wins on Saturday. Outside hitters
Kirra Schulz and
Kennedy Farley posted an impressive double-double with kills and digs in three of the four matches played during the tournament.
CUI 3, CSUEB 2
Cal State East Bay was not ready to end the match after Concordia went up two sets as they came back to take the next two. The Golden Eagles took control of the fifth set as they had a dominant lead from the start with an 8-3 jump at the side switch. The offense was well distributed throughout the match to help with the win.
Three different Golden Eagles recorded a double-double including senior Schulz with 17 kills and 18 digs while leading the team with five aces.
Cassie Prior finished with 12 kills, 11 digs, and four block assists. Farley had 10 kills with 16 digs and three aces and blocks.
Danielle McCasland put down nine kills and served up two aces. Freshman
Kayden Croy came into the game and made an immediate impact for CUI at critical points in the match.
Alyson Fullbright and
Kawehi Chang split the setter duties and each added 16 and 14 digs throughout the match.
Delaney Risse was in the libero jersey and recorded 13 digs and three assists.
Middles put the pressure on CSUEB defensively with
Caitlin Jarrell putting up 10 total blocks with three solo marking a career-high.
Halli Hooks doesn't go unnoticed with two solo and assists while adding three kills offensively.
CUI 3, UCCS 1
Sophomore Hooks continued to impress up at the net with 10 blocks with two solo while Jarrell added two solo bocks up at the net. The duo setters Chang and Fullbright dished out 17 and 25 respectively and libero Risse scooped up 14 digs.
Schulz and Farley led the offense for the Golden Eagles with another double-double night as they had a combined of 29 kills while hitting over .300 and had 11 digs a-piece.
The Mountain Lions took a set off the Golden Eagles in the third but CUI came back in the fourth and kept their momentum to close out the match in four.
The Golden Eagles start the 2023 season 3-1 and will play in the Cougar Classic where they will start the tournament playing the host team Cal State San Marcos on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m.
