IRVINE, Calif. – It is hard to keep a worthy opponent scoreless over the course of an entire soccer match.
Which makes the current six-game run that the Concordia University Irvine women's soccer team is on just that more impressive.
The Golden Eagles blanked Point Loma Nazarene University 1-0 in the PacWest Conference opener for both squads on Saturday. The victory marked the sixth straight victory
and the sixth straight shutout for Concordia over the past three weeks.
CUI made its own luck by keeping the pressure on the Sea Lions throughout the contest. One attack in particular would pay off in a big way.
Newcomer
Antonella Russo drew a foul in the box just a couple minutes before the first half ended. Concordia earned a penalty kick as a result.
Olivia Ocampo calmly stepped up to the circle and smoothly converted her shot to give Concordia a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish.
Solid defensive play was once again a key part of the team's success.
Gabby Breton and
Sophia Munoz on the wings proved to be up for the challenge of sniffing out attacks down the sideline, while also joining the fray when needed. Impressive passing sequences opened up for Concordia in the second half and both teams wound up with four shots apiece after intermission.
Overall, CUI came up with 13 shots to ten for the visitors.
PacWest Defender of the Week
Riley Urquiza collected three saves and her second shutout out of the week. She and the CUI defense now have six consecutive clean sheets after giving up just one goal in the season opener to then-No. 24 Cal State Los Angeles.
The Golden Eagles welcome their local rivals from Biola to town this coming Wednesday, Sept. 27 for their next conference match. The CUI men play first at 3:30 p.m. followed by the women's match at 6:30 p.m.
