IRVINE, Calif. - We are now half way through the regular season and the nationally ranked Concordia women's soccer team has still yet to concede a single goal.
No. 10 Concordia University Irvine soared to a 2-0 victory over Fresno Pacific on Saturday night, capturing its seventh shutout victory - and eighth clean sheet - of the year.
The Golden Eagles have now won 13 straight home matches dating back to the second game of the 2013 season. Incredibly, CUI has shutout opponents in 12 of those 13 home games.Â
This one was even steven after 45 minutes of action, despite CUI taking 13 shots in the first half to only one for the visiting Sunbirds. As is customary, the Golden Eagles peppered the opposing goal with various looks. For the majority of this match, CUI also did a good job maintaining possession and did not allow FPU many chances on the other end.
Maddie Lauro helped instigate the attack by curving towards the side of the box on multiple occasions. She turned the corner in the 51st minute and put a shot on goal that was deflected by the FPU goalie. Fortunately for Concordia, the ball immediately fell in the lap of
Bella Barrett, who jumped on the opportunity and cashed in to give the home team a 1-0 advantage. Lauro was credited with the assist since she helped create that moment.
CUI earned another corner kick in the 78th minute and capitalized to double the lead.Â
Sophia Munoz dropped the ball into the box and it caromed off multiple Golden Eagles before
Maya Little smacked home her first career goal.
Hailey Havican and
Maddie Lauro were credited with assists as they both appeared to direct the ball in Little's direction.
Riley Urquiza was credited with one save and the back line aided her in defending the Concordia goal.Â
Maddie Klasey,
Madison Hall and senior
Sophia Munoz were among the defenders patrolling the pitch to make sure FPU never got too comfortable.
Concordia heads up to San Diego next Saturday for a huge road match at Point Loma. The Sea Lions were ranked No. 16 this past week and extended their winning streak to five after topping Westmont over the weekend.
The Golden Eagles are 7-0-1 and itching for another chance at the defending NCAA DII National Champions who knocked them out of the playoffs last fall. Point Loma won that second round match 1-0 down in San Diego, but CUI has beaten Point Loma in the regular season each of the last two years.
PacWest Conference foes Azusa Pacific and Hawaii Hilo also started October ranked in the recent Top 25 NCAA DII United Soccer Coaches Poll -
giving the league four nationally-ranked women's soccer teams.
The next home game for Concordia is Saturday, Oct. 19 against Chaminade. The ladies play the night game once again at 6:30 p.m. and the men will face off at 4 p.m. in Irvine.
