IRVINE, Calif. –
Hailey Havican capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity and added a second goal in the final 15 minutes of action to help No. 12 Concordia secure an important 2-0 road win over Jessup.
Havican now leads the Golden Eagles with nine goals, four assists and 22 points. She is also tied for the league lead with nine goals on the season.
The game was knotted at 0-0 until the 75th minute. The Golden Eagles drew a penalty kick on a breakaway and Havican stepped up to the spot and nailed the chance by choosing to go to the right side of the net. The goalie guessed wrong and CUI was in front.
CUI earned a corner kick late in the match and the ball found its way to senior defender
Sophia Munoz. The former PacWest Defender of the Week crossed the ball towards the far post and Havican punched it past the keeper to double the margin.
Goalkeeper
Riley Urquiza and the CUI defense clamped down on the Warriors for most of the afternoon and secured the ninth shutout of the year. For Urquiza, that's now 20 clean sheets she has overseen during her CUI career, which ranks second all-time behind Bekah Garvin (25).
Next up for Concordia is a match at Vanguard on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 2:00 p.m. following the men's game at 11:00 a.m.
Concordia is still on pace to finish in the Top 4 of the conference and qualify for the first PacWest Conference women's soccer tournament, which will be held from Thursday, Nov. 14 through Saturday, Nov. 16 at nearby Orange County Great Park. If Concordia, Hawai'i Hilo and Point Loma win out, the Golden Eagles would be in a 2-3 matchup with the Vulcans and the Sea Lions would repeat as regular season conference champions.
