IRVINE, Calif. - A close contest between the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos and the host Concordia Golden Eagles went down to the wire in Saturday's matinee.
Upperclassman
Erika Maggard and sophomore
Izzy Navarro scored 13 points apiece and
Camryn Kiernan added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds, but the Broncos used a 12-0 run in the third quarter to move into the driver's seat and snag a 63-59 win.
The Golden Eagles led by as many as seven in the opening minutes of the first quarter. CUI led by a bucket at the halftime horn by a count of 31-29.
Two free throws by Kiernan tied the contest at 52-52 with about seven minutes left in regulation. CUI was within three points and had a couple tries to even the score in the final minute.
Thanks to a couple missed free throws by the visitors and a couple timeouts left to use for Coach
Christine Collins-Kiernan, the Golden Eagles were able to advance the ball and try to get an open look from downtown. But the Broncos defended the arc well on those last two possessions and prevented the Golden Eagles from forcing overtime.
Another bright spot for CUI was
Ava Dominguez chipping in with eight points and four rebounds off the bench. The sophomore shot 4-for-5 from the floor and gave her team a boost by attacking the rim and scoring in the paint when called upon.Â
Navarro and Maggard each led the way with four assists, and
Sierra Clark added three.Â
After Thanksgiving, the Golden Eagles head to Canada for two games. They play at Simon Fraser University at 1:30 p.m. on Black Friday and then face Northwest Nazarene in the same building on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 11 a.m.
