IRVINE, Calif. - Before the kick-off against the visiting Hawaii Pacific Sharks, the Golden Eagles honored their seven seniors for the last game of their career.
Despite having a below .500 winning average coming into the last game of the season, the Sharks still had some bite left. They played exceptionally aggressively with the Golden Eagles, who were still trying to keep their season alive (only if Hilo University were to tie or lose to Chaminade earlier today).
Each time the Golden Eagles put together a run at the goal, CUI would get a shot off, but they would be just slightly off by a slim margin. From the aggressive play, the Sharks got a good bounce from a deflected pass and ended up scoring the first goal of the game. This score would not change up until the 52nd minute.
Coming out of the half, it seemed as if head coach
Erik Kirsch adjusted the plan of attack, and six minutes into the second half,
Dylan Graham found the back of the net, receiving some great passes from
Ryan Smith and
Marcus Ozmai. With a tied score of 1-1, the Golden Eagles could almost taste a potential game-winning goal from a couple of different runs that were made towards the Shark's goal, unfortunately with no prevail.
Just as the Golden Eagles were within striking distance, the Sharks took advantage of a communication error from CUI and scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute. It was an extremely competitive game that included five total yellow cards.
The Golden Eagles should be proud of their accomplishments this season playing for first year head coachÂ
Erik Kirsch.
