HAYWARD, Calif. – Back in the
national NFCA DII rankings this week, the Concordia University Irvine softball team began its 10-game road trip with a pair of non-conference games at Cal State East Bay.
No. 23 Concordia received strong contributions from pitchers
Katlin Entrup,
Cortney Koelmans and
Megan Casper.
Plus, five different Golden Eagles collected multiple hits on the day, led by outfielder
Megan Johnson who finished with three total hits out of the lead off spot.
Game 1: CSUEB 3, CUI 1
Outfielder
Megan Johnson opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a RBI triple to the wall just moments after senior
Kaia Nisby singled up the middle.
The Pioneers responded with a two-out rally in the bottom of the second and tied things up 1-1.
Annelise Garcia, a member of the 2024 CUI Kickoff Classic All-Tournament Team, later smacked a solo homer to give CSUEB a 2-1 lead in the third.
Starting pitcher
Katlin Entrup limited the Pioneers to just five hits and two earned runs on the afternoon and pitched six full innings. Another unearned run scored for the Pioneers after an error.
In the seventh,
Virginia Nemeth worked a ten-pitch at-bat in her best efforts to spark a rally. Although she popped up, the ensuing hitters were able to load the bases with two out. Up stepped shortstop
Rylie Rohr who patiently worked a 2-2 count by fouling off multiple pitches.
However, unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, Marissa Quintero was able to get a called third strike on the outside corner and the Pioneers hung on for the 3-1 win. Quintero earned the victory and tossed a complete game.
Game 2: CUI 4, CSUEB 2
CUI senior
Cortney Koelmans gave her squad a big boost by not only stepping into the circle for the second game but also announcing her presence in the batter's box.
Koelmans calmly smashed a solo home run in the top of the second inning and helped herself by giving the Golden Eagles the early 1-0 lead once again.
Tessa Jerue helped double the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the third.
Jocelyn Pino scored on the play after she had doubled and advanced on a fly ball earlier in the frame.
After the Pioneers tied the game 2-2 off a home run, Koelmans was at it again in her second at-bat. She poked a fly ball to the outfield for a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2 CUI in the top of the third inning.
Missy Nemeth followed with a RBI double that extended the score to 4-2.
Megan Casper (2-0) entered the circle in the bottom of the third and immediately shut down the East Bay lineup. The Pioneers were sent down 1-2-3 in four consecutive innings behind Casper and the CUI defense. Casper only allowed one hit in her five shutout innings of work and earned the win in relief of Koelmans.
On deck for Concordia is the PacWest Conference opener against Dominican. The Golden Eagles are scheduled to visit the Dominican Penguins this Saturday, Feb. 24 and also Sunday, Feb 25 for doubleheaders. The first games each day will begin at 12 p.m. weather permitting.
CUI will then face Academy of Art later in the week to cap off their 10-game NorCal road trip before heading back to Irvine.
