WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Concordia University Irvine men's lacrosse team had a great chance to knock off the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish on Thursday night.
Unfortunately, PBAU took the wind out of their sails with four late goals to ruin CUI's best-laid plans.
CUI led 10-7 after
Matt Carresi and
Jeremy Barnes scored back-to-back goals. Carresi fed Barnes on his tally and CUI appeared in the driver's seat.
But to the home team's credit, the Sailfish rallied to tie the game before scoring the game-winning goal with just 75 seconds remaining in regulation.
Carresi had a chance to net the equalizer on a breakaway in the final minute but the shot was wide of the net. Concordia maintained possession and called timeout but ultimately didn't get a shot off and the Sailfish hung on for an 11-10 victory.
CUI won many of the statistical battles. Face off specialist
Cade Poe dominated the X by winning 22 of the 25 face-offs. The Golden Eagles also picked up more ground balls than the hosts, 40-29.
CUI also cashed in on 2-of-5 man-up opportunities. The Golden Eagles have consistently been able to score after drawing penalties from their opponents this season, something that bodes well for the remainder of the season.
Concordia opened the scoring in the first period thanks to a goal by
Chad McFadden.
Nick Beeson swung the ball to
Garrett Burns who immediately went to McFadden for the quick shot and score.
CUI led 4-2 after the first period. McFadden finished with a team-high three goals.
Carresi also had three points with a goal and two assists and remains Concordia's leading scorer this season with 13 goals. McFadden is right behind with a dozen scores heading into this weekend.
CUI finishes its three-game road trip in the Sunshine State on Saturday against Florida Tech.
