IRVINE, CALIF. - The Woollett Aquatics Center was filled to the brim with fans, friends, and family. On senior night, the Concordia University Irvine women's water polo team competed against the Bucknell Bisons to close out the week. It was a heart-warming event as eight seniors were recognized for their careers with the Golden Eagles. These unforgettable players included: Samantha Rainey, Abby Mammen, Allie Gaetano, Melinna Galbraith, Tamsyn Evezard, Andie Perreira, Paige Henson, and Cecilia Smith. Their combined efforts in the water have made the season truly special.
During the match, a crucial assist from Sofia Dominguez set up Melinna Galbraith for the first CUI goal. Exclusions occurred rapidly, and both teams took advantage whenever power plays presented themselves. Senior Andie Perreira was the first to score back-to-back goals on a man down advantage. Bumping the score CUI 3-2 to end the first period.
Bucknell fought tooth and nail to keep the lead to a minimum. For every Concordia goal, Bucknell found a way to get it through the cage. Samantha Rainey made three impressive saves to keep the Bison's offense on their toes. Only two goals were scored against the Golden Eagles in the second period.
A quick goalie change occurred entering the third, with freshman Jaden Soto stepping in. Bucknell may have had a 5 to 3 lead in the beginning, but Tamsyn Evezard, Sofia Smith, and Lily Ensley put a stop to that with goals of their own. A contagious energy was growing within the Golden Eagles and Bucknell could feel it.
Tessa Tavaglione won the sprint in the fourth, shifting the momentum in Concordia's favor. Abby Mammen and Tamsyn Evezard found a way to get through the defense and score two more for the Golden Eagles. The Bisons attempted to score before the clock ran out, but Melinna Galbraith had a different idea. With 48 seconds left, Galbraith swooped in, scored, and sealed the win for CUI.
Concordia successfully stopped Bucknell from scoring again, ending the game CUI 9 – BUCK 7.
The Golden Eagles are on the hunt for another win. Next up is the match against CBU on Friday, March 22 at 6:30pm!
