IRVINE, Calif.- On a sunny Saturday morning the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific traveled south to face the Concordia Golden Eagles. No one in the vicinity of the tennis courts could sit as fans were kept on their toes the entire match.
Â
For the doubles point, the twos finished first with
Emilie Lugon-Moulin and
Bryn Johnson taking an easy 6-2 win. The next finish was an unfortunate 5-7 loss by
Tiffany Carrillo and
Sophie Rachor. Fortunately for the Golden Eagles, however,
Alicia Da Re and
Jessica Bear fought hard through the threes tiebreaker and came out victorious (7-6).
Â
Heading into singles the Green and Gold were up 1-0. That quickly increased to 2-0 as Carrillo dominated in the three spot. She won in two sets (6-3 and 6-2). Fresno Pacific fought back taking the next two finishes at the one and two spots to tie 2-2. The next pair to finish was the number fours, and FPU gained their first lead of the match.
It all came down to Johnson and Da Re. Both ladies dominated their matches winning 6-1, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-0 respectively to clinch the victory.
Monday's tennis match with MSU Denver was canceled due to lightning and just enough rain to make the courts too slick to play on.
Women's tennis is back in action on Friday, March 22 as Hawai'i Hilo comes in to take on the Golden Eagles at 10 a.m. PT. That is followed by the men's match at 2 p.m. with both schools.
