IRVINE, Calif. - After clinching the PacWest Conference crown on Friday, the Concordia University Irvine softball team won its four-game series with Hawai'i Pacific to improve to 22-2 in league play.
No. 16 Concordia split the last two games of the series on Saturday and beat the rain by moving up the doubleheader a couple hours.
Game 1: HPU 6, #16 CUI 1
The Sharks got going with five runs in the first inning.
Jayden Nishi came in to the game in the fourth inning and was a major bright spot for Concordia. The freshman tossed four shutout innings and lowered her season ERA to 1.14. She struck out two and only allowed one hit while she was in the game.
On offense, a number of hard-hit balls by the Golden Eagles were sent to deep centerfield.
Rylie Rohr and
Virginia Nemeth each sent a pitch to the warning track but the wind helped keep them in the park.
Kaia Nisby knocked in a run in the seventh with a RBI single to left that scored pinch runner
Alexa Couto.
HPU held on to salvage a win in the four-game series.
Game 2: #16 CUI 7, HPU 4
The second game was a completely different story.
Starting with a RBI single by
Shelli Faulk in the first inning, CUI scored at least one run in each of the first four frames.
Meanwhile, senior pitcher
Katlin Entrup kept the Sharks off the board in the first five innings as CUI built a comfortable 5-0 lead.
HPU made things a bit uncomfortable though in the top of the sixth. They loaded the bases with no outs and were able to trim the score to 5-4 after a couple hits and a couple unearned runs came across.
Cortney Koelmans entered to finish the sixth and then recorded the last three outs in the seventh to secure her third save of the season.
Freshman infielder
Audrey Robles provided some insurance by crushing her first career home run. The two-run shot pushed the CUI lead to 7-4 and wound up being the final score.
