CUI Plays Again Friday In Double Elimination Regional Tournament

NAMPA, Idaho. – The beauty of a double elimination tournament is you get a mulligan if you lose your first game.
 
As it turns out, that will be the path for the Concordia University Irvine softball team at this year's DII West Regional tournament hosted by Northwest Nazarene University.
 
Making their sixth consecutive appearance at the NCAA Regional, the Golden Eagles were eager to get on the field as they opened the tourney against a familiar non-conference opponent in Cal State Dominguez Hills.
 
Unfortunately, it was not their best day at the office and the Golden Eagles fell 7-1 to the Toros.
 
CUI turned three double plays and got a RBI single from senior shortstop Rylie Rohr in the sixth. The Golden Eagles threatened with two runners in scoring position later that inning but were unable to convert.
 
Kaia Nisby also collected two hits. That included the first base knock of the game for CUI in the first innings, when she smacked a double to the gap and advanced to third on a fly out. However, CUI could not get her home before the third out of the inning.
 
Missy Nemeth and right fielder Michalah Robison each added a single.
 
Cortney Koelmans pitched the first three frames and limited CSUDH to just one run. Katlin Entrup came on in relief and worked the final four innings in the circle.
 
Earlier on Thursday, Concordia also had three Golden Eagles named to the NFCA All-Region squads. PacWest Pitcher of the Year Cortney Koelmans made First Team All-Region. She was joined by fellow senior Kaia Nisby and PacWest Freshman of the Year Jessica Im, who were both named to the Second Team as outfielders.
 
CUI faces the loser of the Northwest Nazarene-Saint Martin's game at the same time on Friday. The game is scheduled to start at 12:30 pm PT (which is 1:30 pm local Mountain Time in Idaho).

If the Golden Eagles can survive that contest, they would play again in a second survival game for the chance to be one of two teams still playing on Saturday in Nampa.
