SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball team traveled up north to compete in the Route 92 Classic hosted by Cal State East Bay. The Golden Eagles started the tournament playing in a matinee against Lubbock Christian and then San Francisco State.
Game 1: CUI 3, LCU 2
Concordia played against Lubbock Christian for the first time in program history and put up a tough fight taking the Chaps to five sets and winning with scores 16-25, 27-25, 25-18, and 15-6.
Middles had another stellar performance with
Caitlin Jarrell and
Delaney Gregg putting up double digit in kills for the second straight game. Jarrell had 13 kills and had four blocks with two of those being solo blocks. Freshman Gregg had 10 kills and added five blocks including one solo.
Senior
Kennedy Farley had 13 kills while
Jadyn Orava contributed with another double-double reaching 10 kills and 11 digs.
Kayden Croy added nine kills with two solo blocks and three block assists.
Kawehi Chang and
Macy Scheer led the offense with 34 and 16 assists respectively. Scheer was dominant at the back of the court and served up a team-high of five aces.
Delaney Risse led the CUI defense with 17 digs and
Celia Dowell recorded six digs and two aces.
Game 2: CUI 0, SFSU 3
After losing the first two sets with scores 13-5 and 14-25 Concordia battled in the third to try to extend play but the Gators closed out the match with a close 21-15 score.
Farley led CUI with 12 kills while outside hitters Croy and Orava had a combined 11 kills and four digs. Gregg added four kills out of the middle
Chang dished out 22 assists and threw down three kills with five digs. Risse and Jarrell both served up a team-high of two aces each.
Makena Thomas came into the game and had three digs and two assists to pin hitters.
The Golden Eagles will finish the tournament at Cal State East Bay on Saturday. They play against Sonoma State at 11 a.m. and then against host school CSU East Bay at 4 p.m.
